    sunday 30/03/2025

The Dalston Dub Club is a London-based music collective that blends the classic sounds of 60s and 70s dub and instrumental reggae with a strong jazz influence as well as more modern sounding dub elements.

Formed in the vibrant Dalston neighbourhood, the collective has become an important part of local music scene. While honoring the foundations of reggae, they push boundaries with their distinctive sound and original arrangements, keeping the art of live reggae performances at the centre of their focus

Influenced by pioneers like Lee “Scratch” Perry, King Tubby, and Tippy I Grade, The Dalston Dub Club combines deep basslines, spacious effects, and rhythmic dub structures, blending reggae's steady rhythms and soulful instrumentation with the improvisational freedom of jazz.

    Top Class” – Gilles Peterson

Brilliant playing…tuneful and intricate” – Big Issue

Demonstrating that originality doesn’t have to be complicated” – Observer

Described by the Guardian as “eclectic, eccentric and unobtrusively erudite“, pianist Dr. Bruno Heinen is equally at home supporting Lee Konitz or Roy Hargrove at the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club as he is playing with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. Coming from three generations of classical musicians, Bruno Heinen started playing piano at the age of four. He started composing pieces early on, and was introduced to the world of jazz through the music of Bill Evans by his uncle (jazz pianist Johannes Heinen) in his late teens. His compositional voice has been informed by his love of composers from Duke Ellington to Béla Bártok and from Wayne Shorter to György Ligeti.

Professor of jazz piano and composition at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music, Bruno has written for artists ranging from DJ Vadim to the Camerata Alma Viva string ensemble, with the Independent noting his ‘consistently intelligent linking voice’.

His trio features fiery young talent Kobe Heath Ngugi on bass and acclaimed UK/USA drummer Gene Calderazzo (Pharaoh Sanders, Freddie Hubbard).

    wednesday 16/04/2025

Musician and composer Alasdair Pennington has in recent years established himself as a distinct and creative voice on the drum kit within the London jazz and improvised music scenes. An in-demand sideman, Pennington has performed and recorded with many eminent, international artists across genres including Helen Sung, Baptiste Herbin, Laura Jurd, Michael Dease, Dennis Rollins and The Flaming Lips among others. His musical contributions with various projects have garnered much positive acclaim, including from Downbeat Magazine who in October 2023 wrote: “Pennington’s a kick-ass drummer”.

Pennington has performed and recorded at venues, studios and festivals across England and beyond including Manchester Jazz Festival, Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Abbey Road Studios, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, Cafe Oto, Porgy & Bess (Vienna), Jamboree Jazz Club (Barcelona) and Take 5 Jazz Club (California).

This Is, Pennington’s debut album as leader, was released in October 2024 on Hidden Threads Records. Jazz Journal described the album as “a highly listenable collection which in places harks back to the sound of American jazz from the 50s and 60s”, going on to state that "his craft as a composer really stands out”. Plastic Magazine wrote “This Is takes listeners on a cinematic jazz voyage” describing Pennington as an “imaginative force behind the drum kit”.
